Lionel always had a gift for drawing, but did not practice it regularly, being a sort of closet artist. After his cerebrovascular accident, part of his recovery therapy was to express himself through drawing. For years, he made a different drawing everyday and produced thousands. Many of these were reproduced as wood carvings by Cuban artist Joya. In this section you will find a selection of Lionel’s drawings and the matching carvings by Joya. Exhibitions of Lionel’s drawings and Joya’s carvings were held at different venues in Havana: the Community Mental Health Center in Playa, the International Center for Neurological Rehabilitation, and the Cafe Cuba Libro in Vedado, Havana. Below on this page you will see photos of the Cuba Libro Exhibition in 2015.

DRAWINGS BY LIONEL WOOD CARVINGS BY JOYA

EXHIBITION AT CAFE CUBA LIBRO 2015
The exhibition held in 2015 at the Cafe Cuba Libro, the only bookshop in Havana that sells books in English, had two sections: 1) the Monsieur Pamplemousse drawings that Lionel made during his first year of marriage to his Canadian wife Adrienne Hunter. (These drawings were compiled by Adrienne who added her comments and made the little book Life with Monsieur Pamplemousse.) 2) a selection of the drawings that Lionel made as part of his Healing Through the Arts Therapy, together with their corresponding wood carvings by Cuban sculptor Joya.
