We had never made a website. In fact, we had no idea about making a webpage. We thought Lionel Martin’s journalistic work would be interesting for people who want to do research, or just know, about Cuban history from 1961 to 1998. During those years, the small island in the Caribbean frequently became the focus of international attention. So we set about to make Lionel’s reports available. We began by digitalizing hundreds of time-yellowed teletype reports, newspaper clippings and audio cassettes. Lionel had published 2 books and had started writing 2 more that were never finished. We digitalized all 4, plus a small booklet with his drawings and comments written by his wife Adrienne. When we had a fair amount of reports and all the books in digital form, we started creating Lionel Martin’s website… and learning how to do it in the process. We realized that a site with books and reports alone would not be enough. It needed introductions, explanations and, most of all, information about the man who had written them. It was a difficult, time consuming task for people who had no training or experience in the matter. However, most of the materials were so interesting that we thought it was worth the effort. The first version of lionelmartinjournalist.com here available to you was a team work and a labor of love..
